Indian E-Commerce Market to reach $60-70 Billion by 2019

  • Increased proliferation of smartphone from 120-140 million in 2014 to 600-700 million in 2020 Lower cost of connectivity and improved quality Expanded reach in lower tier cities and rural areas due to investments in network infrastructure
  • Efforts by players to develop payment channels ( cash on delivery, mobile wallets, e-gift cards) and streamlined logistics infrastructure have aided e-commerce growth

Physical Retail Vs. E-commerce - Comparative trends in Gift Cards

Physical (brick-and-mortar) retailers have been among the earliest adopters of Gift Cards. E-commerce players (online retailers) have entered the Gift Card scene rather recently, but have shown a rapid rate of adoption and growth. A look at how Gift Card usage and adoption compares across both these worlds throws up some interesting insights:
  • In terms of overall sales, e-commerce players seem to be fast catching up with physical retailers, with the gap narrowing very fast.
  • E-commerce players seem to have woken up to the immense possibilities of e-Gift Cards with almost 92% contribution coming from them. Physical retailers on the other hand are yet to embrace e-Gift Cards, with less than 1% contribution coming from e-Gift Cards.
  • Large Format Retailers’ adoption of E-Gift Cards seems to be mirroring E-commerce majors’ adoption of Physical Gift Cards.
With E-commerce players making huge strides in a relatively short amount of time, it is a great opportunity for physical retailers to re-energize their Gift Card programs and leverage their first-mover advantage.
